    Behind the wheel

    0.0 g/L: Clear
    Clear head, steady hands, quick reactions.
    The only level at which you are always fit to drive.
    0.2 g/L: Relaxed
    Relaxed and warm, with some loss of judgement.
    Following moving objects and doing two things at once already get harder.
    0.5 g/L: Loosened
    Louder and bolder. Judgement is impaired and fine control, like focusing the eyes, starts to slip.
    Coordination drops, steering is harder and reactions to emergencies slow down.
    0.8 g/L: Unsteady
    Balance, speech, vision, hearing and reaction time suffer. Danger is harder to spot.
    Concentration, short-term memory and speed control fade.
    1.0 g/L: Impaired
    Slurred speech, slow thinking and clearly slower reactions.
    Keeping in lane and braking on time become a struggle.
    1.5 g/L: Heavily impaired
    Far less muscle control and a major loss of balance. Vomiting may occur.
    Control of the vehicle, attention and what you see and hear are badly impaired.

    Driving limits in Europe

    Most countries set 0.5 g/L. Several set 0.2 or zero, and new and professional drivers often face 0.2 or zero. The safest limit is always zero.

    How drinks add up

    In many European countries a standard drink holds about 10 g of pure alcohol, roughly a single 3 cl measure of a 40% spirit. Your body clears about one an hour, and nothing speeds that up.
