    Turn it up: what watts, bass and distance really mean

    Compare 3 to 12 watts on a beat you can play, then walk away from the speaker and watch the level fall.

    Where will it play?

    Doubling the power adds 3 dB. It takes about 10 dB, ten times the power, to sound twice as loud.

    How far it carries

    Outdoors, sound loses about 6 dB each time the distance doubles. Indoors, walls bounce some of it back.

    Does a higher wattage mean a louder speaker?

    Yes, but less than you might think. Doubling the power adds about 3 dB, and it takes about ten times the power to sound twice as loud. A 12 W speaker plays about 6 dB louder than a 3 W one, roughly one and a half times as loud.

    Why do small speakers have less bass?

    Deep notes need a lot of air moved, and a small cone can only push so much. Larger speakers, and designs with a passive radiator that works like a second cone, reach lower. For a desk, 3 to 5 W is plenty; for a garden or a busy room, look at 10 W and up.

    How far can I be from a Bluetooth speaker?

    Portable speakers typically hold a Bluetooth link at around 10 m. Walls, people and other wireless devices shorten it, so keep the phone in the same room for a steady connection.

    First digit: dust. Second digit: water. X means not tested.

    Where is it going?

    IPX7 or IP67, and rinse it in fresh water after sand and salt.

    IP ratings are tested in fresh water. Salt, chlorine and soap are not part of the test.

    What do IPX4, IPX5, IPX6 and IPX7 mean?

    The IP code comes from IEC 60529. The first digit rates dust and the second rates water; X means not tested. IPX4 resists splashes, IPX5 water jets, IPX6 powerful jets and IPX7 immersion in 1 metre of water for 30 minutes. IP67 adds dust-tight.

    Can a rated speaker go in the sea or a pool?

    Ratings are tested in fresh water, so salt water, chlorine and soap are outside the test. Keep speakers out of the pool and the sea, rinse them in fresh water after a beach day and let the ports dry before charging.

    Is an IPX7 speaker also protected against water jets?

    Not necessarily. Immersion and jets are separate tests, so a speaker that passes both carries both codes, such as IPX5/IPX7. Water resistance can also fade with wear over the years.

    Can two speakers play in stereo?

    Many can, with a feature called TWS stereo pairing: two identical speakers link up as left and right. Place them apart and aim them at the listener, ideally as an equilateral triangle with 60 degrees between them.

    How is a logo applied to a speaker?

    Pad printing for smooth plastic, laser or CO2 engraving for aluminium and bamboo, doming for a glossy badge, and full-colour digital print on fabric or a printed grille. Each product lists what it supports, and you approve a proof first.
