    Why not 100%?

    Power banks store energy at about 3.7 V and phones charge at 5 V or more. Conversion and cable losses mean roughly 60% to 70% of the rated capacity reaches the phone. These estimates use 65%.

    Taking a power bank on a plane

    To an airline, a power bank is a spare lithium battery, not a gadget. Pack the bags, check the watt hours and see what the 2026 rules allow on board.

    Check the watt hours

    Airlines set limits in watt hours (Wh), not mAh. Wh = mAh x volts / 1,000. Most power banks use 3.7 V cells.

    Up to 100 Wh: allowed in cabin baggage without airline approval.

    Over 100 Wh and up to 160 Wh: only with your airline's approval, if at all. IATA plans to drop this option from 2027.

    Over 160 Wh: not allowed on passenger aircraft.

    Charging tech

    Watts, wireless and the sun

    Capacity is how much. Watts are how fast. Set up a charger, a cable and a device to watch the power flow, then compare wired, magnetic and solar charging.

    Charging runs at the lowest of three limits: the charger, the cable and what the device accepts.

    Wireless pads do not use a cable, so only the pad and the phone set the speed.

    Four ways to charge

    USB-C PD

    USB Power Delivery agrees the right voltage with each device: up to 100 W, or 240 W with PD 3.1 and a 240 W cable.

    GaN

    Gallium nitride chargers lose less energy as heat, so a powerful charger can be much smaller.

    Qi2 magnetic

    Magnets line up the coils every time. Qi2 launched at 15 W in 2023, and Qi2 25W followed in 2025.

    Solar
