Take a pen apart

Clip The favourite branding spot, right at eye level.
Push button Click or twist: the mechanism that brings the tip out.
Barrel Plastic, recycled paper, aluminium or brass.
Spring Pushes the refill back in when you click again.
Refill Holds the ink. Swap it and the pen lives on.
Tip and ball A tiny ball, often tungsten carbide, rolls the ink onto the paper.
The ink lab
Pick an ink and a colour, then watch it write.
Oil-based, viscous paste ink: a clean, even line and the classic all-rounder.
Water-based gel, usually with pigments: bold, vivid lines, even in metallic or pastel shades.
Water-based liquid ink that soaks deeper into paper, for a smooth wet-ink feel close to a fountain pen.
A graphite tip instead of ink: it draws a pencil-like line and needs no sharpening.
How far does a refill write?
One lap of a running track is 400 m. Pick a pen and count the laps.

Ink for contracts
For signatures and official records, look for refills tested to ISO 12757-2 (DOC), the standard for documentary use. Ask us which refills qualify.
