Sofia (София)

Roses, letters and the oldest gold on Earth
Bulgaria has carried the same name since the year 681, which makes it one of the oldest surviving state names in Europe, and it has been quietly overachieving ever since. It gave the world the Cyrillic alphabet and the European Union its third official script. Its museums hold the oldest worked gold ever found. A valley near Kazanlak scents half the world’s perfume, a bacterium in every pot of proper yoghurt carries the country’s name, and a song from the Rhodope mountains is currently leaving the solar system aboard Voyager. Here is a short, hands-on tour of the place we deliver to.
Thirteen centuries with one name
Tap through the layers, from goldsmiths on the Black Sea to the newest member of the euro. Sofia barely gets a look-in; Bulgaria never needed a single city to carry it.
The Varna gold
In 1972 a digger operator near the Black Sea coast turned up a necropolis that rewrote the history books. The gold buried at Varna around 4500 BC is the oldest processed gold ever found anywhere on Earth, older than Egypt, older than Mesopotamia. Whoever these people were, they were weighing status in gold two thousand years before the pyramids, on the shore Bulgarians still swim from today.
The Thracians
Before the Bulgarians came the Thracians, horse lords and goldsmiths whose treasures, like the nine-piece Panagyurishte service, still glow in exhibition halls around the world. Their painted tomb at Kazanlak is a UNESCO site, their most famous musician was Orpheus of the Rhodopes, and their most famous rebel was Spartacus, born in these lands before he shook Rome itself.
A state is founded
In 681 Khan Asparuh led the Bulgars across the Danube, struck a deal with the local Slavs and founded a state that Byzantium was forced to recognise. The remarkable part is what happened next: nothing, at least to the name. Through empires, occupations and every century since, the country has been called Bulgaria without interruption, a piece of branding thirteen centuries old.
The Golden Age and the alphabet
After Boris I adopted Christianity, the literary schools at Preslav and Ohrid took the mission alphabet of Saints Cyril and Methodius and refined it into what the world now calls Cyrillic. Under Tsar Simeon the Great, Bulgaria became the cultural engine room of the Slavic world, exporting books and letters the way others exported grain. Around 300 million people write with that gift today.
The Second Empire
The Asen brothers threw off Byzantine rule in 1185 and built a second empire from Veliko Tarnovo, a capital stacked on cliffs above a looping river. Its painters were ahead of their time: the frescoes at Boyana, dated 1259, put lifelike human faces on saints two generations before the Italians got round to it.
The Ottoman centuries
The Ottoman conquest of 1396 opened five centuries under a foreign empire. Bulgarian language and faith survived the long wait in mountain monasteries like Rila, in village churches and in songs, passed carefully from one generation to the next until the country was ready to speak up again.
The National Revival
It began, fittingly for Bulgaria, with a book: a monk named Paisiy wrote a history of the Bulgarians in 1762 and told his countrymen to be proud of it. Merchants built the gorgeous timbered houses of Plovdiv and Koprivshtitsa, every town raised a chitalishte, a community reading room, and in 1876 the April Uprising told the world, at terrible cost, that Bulgaria intended to exist.
Liberation
The Russo-Turkish War of 1877 to 1878 ended five centuries of Ottoman rule, and the third Bulgarian state took shape. The date of the San Stefano treaty, the third of March, is still the national holiday, marked with flags on Shipka Peak where the decisive battles were fought in the snow.
The hard century
The twentieth century dealt Bulgaria wars, lost territories and four decades behind the Iron Curtain. It also produced one of the era’s brighter chapters: during the Second World War, protests by Bulgarian society and church leaders stopped the deportation of the country’s 48,000 Jews. In 1989 the old regime fell, and the long walk back to Europe began.
Into Europe
Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007 and brought a dowry: Cyrillic became the Union’s third official alphabet, after Latin and Greek. On the first of January 2026 the country adopted the euro, the newest member of the currency, with the horseman of Madara riding on its coins. The oldest gold in the world now shares a wallet with the newest.
Older than the pharaohs. Tap a treasure to place it in time.
The Varna gold was worked around 4500 BC, almost two thousand years before the Great Pyramid. Tap a treasure above to place it in time.
The alphabet with its own public holiday
Cyrillic was perfected in Bulgaria’s medieval literary schools and given to the Slavic world, and the country has never stopped celebrating it. The twenty-fourth of May is a national holiday for the alphabet itself, with parades of schoolchildren carrying letters like trophies. Bulgaria is, as far as anyone can tell, the only country on Earth with a public holiday for its writing system.
Blagodarya: thank you. Nine letters, several of which English has no direct answer to.
Try it yourself. Type your name and watch it cross the alphabet.
Phonetic and friendly, the way a Bulgarian would write you into their phone. Not a legal document.
Meet a few of the letters. Tap one.
Yes means shake, no means nod
Bulgaria’s most famous piece of body language: the head gestures for yes and no run the opposite way to most of the world. A side-to-side shake means da, yes. A crisp upward nod means ne, no. Ask our friend here.
Go on, ask him something.
Around foreigners, many Bulgarians politely switch to the international version, which makes everything considerably worse. When in doubt, listen for the word, not the head.
The bracelet that waits for spring
On the first of March, Grandmother March arrives. Bulgarians give each other martenitsi, twists of red and white yarn, often shaped as a boy and girl called Pizho and Penda, and wear them until they see the first stork, swallow or blossoming tree. Then the martenitsa is tied to a branch, and spring is officially allowed to begin. The custom is on UNESCO’s heritage list, and every March half the trees in Bulgaria wear jewellery. Dress this one.
A bare branch at the end of winter. Baba Marta is on her way.
Monsters against the dark
In midwinter, Bulgarian villages send out the kukeri: men in shaggy goat-hair costumes and carved horned masks, with great copper bells strapped to their belts. They leap and dance through the streets so the noise and the fright chase evil spirits out before spring. The tradition is ancient, village-owned and UNESCO-listed, and the Surva festival in Pernik gathers thousands of kukeri from across the country every January. Give this one some work to do.
The bells alone can weigh more than the dancer’s children.
A gram of dawn
South of the Balkan range lies the Rose Valley around Kazanlak, where the oil-bearing Rosa damascena has been grown for more than three centuries. The petals are picked by hand before sunrise in May and June, while the oil is still asleep in them, and the arithmetic is merciless: it takes roughly 1,300 roses to distil one single gram of rose oil. Bulgaria produces close to half the world’s supply, which is why so many famous perfumes begin their lives in this one valley. Try the morning shift.
0roses picked
Dawn in the Valley. The pickers work fast, before the sun burns the scent away.
Voices and echoes
For a country of six and a half million, Bulgaria makes an extraordinary amount of sound, some of it currently travelling through interstellar space. Tap one.
A taste of Bulgaria
Bulgarians will tell you their tomatoes taste of tomato and their yoghurt cannot be made anywhere else, and they have a bacterium with the national name on it to prove the second point. Flip a card.
