Beer foam, robots and the oldest ceramics on Earth
Czechs have drunk more beer per person than anyone on Earth for roughly three decades running, and they invented the golden lager the rest of the world drinks too. They also coined the words robot and pistol, named the dollar by way of a Bohemian mining town, fired the oldest ceramic figure known to humanity, and treat mushroom hunting as a national sport with classified locations. Here is a short, hands-on tour of the place we deliver to.
From a clay Venus to a velvet goodbye
Tap through the layers. The story runs from a Moravian hillside thirty millennia ago to the gentlest breakup in political history, and Prague only gets one window scene.
Great Moravia
The first great state in these lands rose in ninth-century Moravia, and in 863 it invited two Byzantine brothers, Cyril and Methodius, who arrived carrying a brand-new alphabet for the Slavs. The mission that began here later flowered into Cyrillic in Bulgaria, which means the letters used by some 300 million people today started life as a Moravian church project.
Good King Wenceslas
The good king of the Christmas carol was a real Czech duke: Václav, pious, generous and murdered by his own brother in 935. He became the country’s patron saint almost immediately, and eleven centuries later he still is, which is a long run for any brand.
Charles IV
Under Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, the Czech lands became the centre of Europe. He founded Central Europe’s first university in 1348, built Karlštejn castle to guard the crown jewels, and lent his name to the spa town of Karlovy Vary. Seven centuries on, a national television poll voted him the Greatest Czech of all time, ahead of every modern candidate.
The Hussites
Jan Hus preached church reform a full century before Luther and was burned for it at Constance in 1415. His followers, largely farmers fighting from armoured war wagons, then defeated five successive crusades sent against them. Their little hand-gun, the píšťala, and their crowd-scattering houfnice marched into English as the pistol and the howitzer.
Out of the window
Under the Habsburgs from 1526, tensions built until 1618, when Bohemian nobles threw two imperial governors and their secretary out of a Prague Castle window. All three survived the twenty-metre drop, thanks to angels by the Catholic account and a dung heap by the Protestant one, and the Thirty Years’ War that redrew Europe began with that landing. Czechs remain the only nation with defenestration as a recurring historical genre.
The composers
Smetana mapped the homeland in music with Má vlast, following the Vltava from spring to sea. Dvořák’s New World Symphony conquered America and kept going: a recording of it flew to the Moon with Apollo 11. And in Moravia, Janáček wandered the markets writing down the melodies of ordinary speech, turning how people talk into how operas sound.
The National Revival
In the nineteenth century the Czech language was rebuilt from village speech into a modern literature, reading room by reading room. A National Theatre was paid for by public collection, burned down within weeks, and was promptly paid for all over again. Meanwhile Bohemia quietly became the industrial workshop of the entire Austro-Hungarian empire.
The First Republic
Czechoslovakia was born in 1918 with a philosopher, Masaryk, as president, and rapidly ranked among the most industrialised countries on Earth. Tomáš Baťa of Zlín shod half the planet from a purpose-built functionalist town, complete with an office installed inside a moving lift, and Brno’s glass-walled Villa Tugendhat, now UNESCO-listed, showed the world what modern living could look like.
The hard century
Munich 1938 carved the country up in its absence, remembered here in four words: about us, without us. Occupation and the tragedy of Lidice followed, then a communist coup in 1948 and Soviet tanks against the Prague Spring in 1968. In November 1989 crowds jingled their keys on squares across the country, the regime folded in weeks, and the dissident playwright Václav Havel went from prison to the presidency inside a single year.
Velvet Divorce, then Europe
On the first of January 1993 Czechoslovakia split into two countries without a single shot fired or friendship lost, an event still known, accurately, as the Velvet Divorce. Czechia joined the EU in 2004, kept its koruna, and maintains one point of national order above all: in a proper pub, the beer still costs less than the bottled water.

Four ways to pour a beer
Czechs have drunk more beer per head than any nation on Earth every year for around three decades, well over a hundred litres each, and the golden lager everyone else drinks was invented in Plzeň in 1842, when a Bavarian brewer named Josef Groll poured the first pale pilsner. But the real national art is the pour itself: the tapster is a respected trade with its own championships, and the foam is the whole point. Try all four official pours.

Roughly seven in ten Czechs go mushroom hunting, the mushroom atlas is a perennial bestseller, and after summer rain the forests fill by six in the morning. The glass that sings
Bohemian glassmakers have been at their craft for some seven centuries, and their crystal chandeliers glitter in opera houses and palaces around the world. In Karlovy Vary, Moser has cut its lead-free glass of kings for royal tables since 1857, and a good glassmaker still judges a piece by ear before eye. Go on, give it a flick.
