The nation that sang itself free
Latvia keeps over 1.2 million folk-song verses, catalogued in a purpose-built cabinet of tiny drawers, and every five years it puts a choir the size of a town on one stage. In 1991 it took its independence back with songs and barricades rather than bullets. It also raised the tailor who riveted the world’s jeans, ran a Caribbean colony from a Baltic duchy, and owns Europe’s widest waterfall, in a town that once caught fish out of the air. Here is a short, hands-on tour of the place we deliver to.
Amber, orders and awakenings
Tap through the layers, from forty-million-year-old resin to a human chain three countries long.
Balts and amber
The Balts have lived beside this sea for some four thousand years, among the oldest peoples of Europe still on their original land, speaking one of its most archaic living languages. Their calling card was amber, fossil resin the surf still surrenders after storms, traded along routes so long that beads of it, studies suggest, reached as far as Tutankhamun’s Egypt.
Crusaders and Riga
German crusaders arrived at the mouth of the Daugava and founded Riga in 1201, and the land became Terra Mariana, the Land of Mary, ruled by knightly orders and bishops. The locals kept their language, their songs and their signs, and waited.
Hanseatic centuries
Riga grew wealthy in the Hanseatic League, shipping wax, grain, flax and timber across the northern seas. In 1510 its merchant Brotherhood of Blackheads raised the first documented decorated Christmas tree in the town square; Tallinn has opinions about this claim, but Riga has the plaque.
Courland’s colonies
The seventeenth-century Duchy of Courland, under Duke Jacob, built one of the Baltic’s great fleets and did something gloriously improbable: it acquired colonies, on Tobago in the Caribbean and at the mouth of the Gambia in Africa. For a few decades a duchy you can drive across in an afternoon ran a transatlantic enterprise, and New Courland appeared on maps of the tropics.
Swedish and Russian rule
Under Sweden, Riga was for a time the largest city of the entire Swedish empire; from 1710 the Baltic provinces passed to Russia, supplying the tsars with grain, sailors and engineers. Through every change of flag, the countryside kept singing, which turned out to be the strategically decisive fact.
The Awakening
In the nineteenth century the National Awakening turned a peasantry’s culture into a nation’s: newspapers, schools and, in 1873, the first nationwide Song Festival. Krišjānis Barons began sorting the people’s verses into his famous cabinet, and Latvians discovered just how much they had been composing all along.
Independence
On 18 November 1918 Latvia declared independence, then secured it in fact through the freedom struggles that followed. In barely twenty years the interwar republic built schools, co-operatives and one of the most literate societies in Europe.
The hard century
1940 brought Soviet occupation, then Nazi occupation, then Soviet again. The deportations of 1941 and 1949 carried tens of thousands to Siberia in cattle wagons, a wound every Latvian family can locate by name. It is remembered soberly, and precisely.
The Singing Revolution
Freedom came back the way it had been kept: in song. Festivals became demonstrations; on 23 August 1989 two million people joined hands in the Baltic Way, an unbroken human chain of 675 kilometres from Tallinn through Riga to Vilnius; in January 1991 Rigans built barricades and sang behind them. Independence was restored that August, almost without a shot.
Into Europe
Latvia joined the EU and NATO in 2004 and the euro in 2014, wired itself with some of the fastest internet on the continent, and kept the essentials: the festival every five years, the mittens, the cabinet. The drawers, Latvians note, are not full yet.

The cabinet of a million songs
Latvia’s folk poetry comes in dainas: four short lines, no rhyme required, one for every task, season and feeling from cradle to grave. Krišjānis Barons spent decades sorting some 218,000 handwritten slips into a purpose-built cabinet of tiny drawers, the Dainu skapis, now inscribed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World register, and the national collection has grown past 1.2 million verses, nearly one for every Latvian alive. Six drawers are unlocked below, in translated renderings. Open one.
Play the kokle
The kokle is Latvia’s ancient box zither, eldest of the Baltic psaltery family, traditionally carved from a single piece of wood and played from lap or table. At the great festivals, whole kokle orchestras shimmer together. This one is tuned so that anything you play sounds like a Baltic evening. Sound on.

Sixteen thousand voices, one breath
The Song and Dance Celebration has run since 1873, every five years or so, and is UNESCO-listed: around forty thousand singers, dancers and players take part across the week, and the closing concert at Mežaparks puts a choir of sixteen thousand and more on a single stage. Choirs rehearse for years; tickets vanish like cup finals. Fill the stage yourself.
0voices on stage

An alphabet of signs
Older than writing here is the geometry: protective signs woven into the Lielvārde belt, knitted into mittens by the thousand and carved over doors. When Latvia hosted a NATO summit in 2006, every delegation went home with hand-knitted mittens, each pattern a sentence in this alphabet. Tap a sign to read it.
Jump the Jāņi fire
Jāņi, the summer solstice, is Latvia’s true national holiday: oak-leaf crowns for every Jānis, flower crowns for everyone else, caraway cheese, bonfires on every hill and the refrain līgo! sung until a four a.m. sunrise. Jumping the fire, ideally hand in hand, secures luck for the year. The meadow is yours.
Midsummer eve on a meadow: the shortest night of the year, and nobody intends to sleep through it.
The green half of the map
Latvia is one of the greenest countries in the EU, and its landscapes specialise in quiet superlatives. Tap one.
Made by Latvians
For a nation of under two million, Latvia has left fingerprints in some unexpected pockets, one of them literally. Flip a card.

Latvian food is rye, smoke, caraway and the settled certainty that winter is coming and must be out-cooked. Flip a card.
