Grècia, sense embuts
Sí, i amb ganes. Després d'anys de creixement per sobre de la mitjana europea, el país va recuperar el grau d'inversió el 2023, el turisme bat rècords i els fons europeus financen una onada d'infraestructures i digitalització. Suma-hi la flota mercant més gran del món en mans gregues i una escena tecnològica que creix a Atenes: el pessimisme va arribar tard a la remuntada.

Around 150,000 English words trace back to Greek, including Europe herself, named for a princess a Greek god carried across the sea. This is where the computer arrived two thousand years early, where an island of centenarians keeps forgetting to die, where the world’s largest merchant fleet is quietly owned, and where the national speed limit is two words long: siga siga. Here is a short, hands-on tour of the place we deliver to.

Europe’s first great civilisation rose on Crete around four thousand years ago: palace complexes at Knossos with frescoes of leaping dolphins and bull-vaulting athletes, workshops, archives, and plumbing that actually worked. When the rest of the continent was in huts, Crete was filing paperwork.
The Mycenaeans built citadels with walls so vast later Greeks assumed giants had stacked them, and fought the war at Troy that memory turned to legend. Centuries on, Homer composed the Iliad and the Odyssey from that legend, and European literature has been footnoting him ever since.
In 776 BC the first recorded Olympic Games were held at Olympia, and Greeks began measuring time itself in Olympiads. Around the same age they took the Phoenician consonants and added vowels, producing the first full alphabet; the word is simply its first two letters, alpha and beta, saying their own names.
In roughly one long human lifetime, Greece invented or perfected democracy, theatre, history-writing and Western philosophy, while Hippocrates of Kos was turning medicine from magic into observation. Athens got the marble headlines, but the ideas were argued out in city-states from Sicily to Ionia.
From Macedonia in the north, a twenty-something taught by Aristotle conquered his way to India and scattered Greek cities, and the Greek language, across three continents. In the Hellenistic world that followed, someone built the Antikythera mechanism, a geared bronze computer for predicting eclipses, about two millennia ahead of schedule.
Rome conquered Greece in 146 BC and promptly surrendered culturally: Greek tutors, Greek doctors, Greek philosophy, Greek gods with new names. The poet Horace put it best: captive Greece took her rough conqueror captive.
For over a thousand years the Greek-speaking Eastern Roman Empire carried classical learning through the centuries, with Thessaloniki as its glittering second city. Its monks raised monasteries on the cliff-tops of Meteora and the peninsula of Athos, where a self-governing republic of monks endures to this day.
After nearly four centuries of Ottoman rule, Greece rose in 1821 under the cry Eleftheria i Thanatos, freedom or death, a motto still on the state seal. Klephts fought in the mountains, admirals like Bouboulina fought at sea, and Lord Byron, who came to help, died for the cause at Missolonghi in 1824.
Greece revived the Olympics in 1896, then endured wars, the Asia Minor catastrophe of 1922 and a brutal occupation. On the 28th of October 1940 it answered an ultimatum from Mussolini with a single word, no, still celebrated every year as Oxi Day: a national holiday for refusing. Democracy, the local invention, was restored for good in 1974.
Greece joined the European Community in 1981 and the euro in 2001, weathered a famous storm, and sailed on: Greek shipowners quietly control the largest merchant fleet on Earth, roughly a fifth of the world’s tonnage, and some thirty-plus million visitors a year come to check on the light.
