Vier Weltmarken fertigen hier.

Shepherd flutes, castle hills and the gentlest divorce in history
Slovakia keeps the world’s oldest working mint, a shepherd’s flute taller than the shepherd, and, by many counts, more castles per head than anywhere in Europe. It gave 1968 its human face, gave pop art its parents, and when it parted from the Czechs in 1993 it managed history’s gentlest divorce: no drama, no shots fired, still each other’s favourite neighbours. Here is a short, hands-on tour of the place we deliver to.
From a mammoth-ivory Venus to velvet, twice
Tap through the layers. Slovakia’s story is a mountain story: whoever held the passes and the mines mattered, and the shepherds outlasted them all.
Venus & Celts
A mammoth-ivory Venus carved at Moravany some twenty millennia ago is Slovakia’s oldest masterpiece; much later, Celtic mints around the Bratislava hills struck handsome silver biatecs, coins so admired they ended up engraved on modern Slovak ones. Money, it turns out, is an old local habit.
The mission
In 863 Prince Rastislav of Great Moravia invited two scholars from Thessaloniki, Cyril and Methodius, who arrived with a brand-new alphabet and the liturgy in the people’s own tongue. The mission landed here first, and its echoes travelled half a continent; the anniversary is still a state holiday.
The mining kingdom
For a thousand years Slovaks lived under the Hungarian crown, and their mountains paid for much of it: Kremnica’s mint has struck coins continuously since 1328, the oldest still working anywhere on Earth, and Banská Štiavnica’s silver financed empires before the town founded Europe’s first mining academy in 1762.
The coronation city
With the Ottomans holding Buda, Bratislava spent nearly three centuries as the Kingdom of Hungary’s capital and coronation city: nineteen crowned heads took the oath here, Maria Theresa among them, riding up the coronation hill to swing a drawn sword at the four horizons.
Štúr & Jánošík
The national awakening gave Slovaks a standard language, codified by Ľudovít Štúr in 1843 from the central mountain dialects, and a patron outlaw to write it about: Jánošík, the highwayman who, legend swears, took from the rich, gave to the poor and vaulted fir to fir with his valaška hatchet. Every mountain nation needs one; Slovakia’s came with better folklore than most.
Czechoslovakia
In 1918 Slovaks and Czechs founded a shared republic, the very country our Czechia page remembers from the other side. Its Slovak co-founder, Milan Rastislav Štefánik, was an astronomer, a French general and a diplomat all at once, and remains the national benchmark for overachievement.
The hard century
The war years brought a client regime and the deportation of Slovak Jews, a history the country now examines openly. In answer, the Slovak National Uprising of 1944 put tens of thousands into the mountains against Nazi Germany, one of Europe’s largest resistance risings, with Banská Bystrica at its heart. Communism followed in 1948. It is remembered soberly, and by name.
A Slovak face
The attempt to give socialism a human face had a Slovak one: Alexander Dubček. For eight months of 1968 the world watched the Prague Spring almost work, until Warsaw Pact tanks answered in August. The face was not forgotten: in 1989, the crowds carried his name back into the squares.
Velvet, twice
In November 1989 Slovaks and Czechs jingled their keys and walked out of communism together; in January 1993 they parted ways in the Velvet Divorce, history’s most amicable separation: assets split two to one, no shots fired, no grudges kept. They remain each other’s favourite foreigners, which both deny and everyone knows.
Peaks and paychecks
In the EU since 2004 and on the euro since 2009, Slovakia became, per head of population, the planet’s great car builder, as the assembly line at the top of this page cheerfully insists. Beyond the factory gates wait the High Tatras, thousands of caves, and castle ruins on what feels like every second hill.

Play the fujara
The fujara is a shepherd’s flute nearly two metres tall, played standing, with just three finger holes and a voice like weather. Each phrase opens with the rozfuk, a cascading rush down the overtones, before settling onto the deep fundamental. UNESCO proclaimed it a masterpiece of humanity’s heritage in 2005. Sound on, and breathe out slowly.
Nearly two metres of maple, three holes, and a mountain range’s worth of patience.
Paint the Čičmany house
In the village of Čičmany, dark log houses wear white lime patterns like lace: suns, diamonds, zigzags and hearts, renewed by the women each spring, first to protect the timber joints and then, gloriously, for their own sake. After a great fire in 1921 the village rebuilt itself exactly as it had been, and in 1977 it became the world’s first protected reservation of folk architecture. Your brush is loaded.
