Warum Litauen funktioniert
Kleines Land, Laserfokus.

Lithuania · up close
Lithuania was the last pagan country in Europe, baptised only in 1387, and once the largest, a Grand Duchy stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Its language is the closest living relative of the speech Indo-Europeans used thousands of years ago, its cold soup is the loudest pink in any kitchen, its lasers equip cutting-edge labs across the planet, and in 1990 it walked out of the Soviet Union first. Here is a short, hands-on tour of the place we deliver to.
Tap through the layers. The story runs from oak groves and eternal flames to book smugglers, forest brothers and a march out of an empire.
The Balts have held this coast for thousands of years, trading amber down long rivers and keeping a language so conservative that linguists treat it as a time machine. The great French linguist Antoine Meillet put it plainly: anyone wishing to hear how Indo-Europeans spoke should come and listen to a Lithuanian farmer.
Lithuania enters written history in 1009, in a monastery chronicle recording a missionary’s bad day on the pagan frontier. In 1253 Mindaugas was crowned the first and only King of Lithuania; the crown lapsed, but the state he stitched together did not.
While the rest of Europe had been Christian for centuries, Lithuania kept its sacred oak groves, eternal flames and honoured grass snakes, fending off crusaders for two hundred years. Only in 1387 did the country formally accept baptism, the last in Europe, and even then the old songs, signs and midsummer fires never really left.
Under Vytautas the Great the Grand Duchy of Lithuania became the largest state in Europe, stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea, and ran it with striking pragmatism: many faiths, many languages, one administration. In 1410, at Grunwald, its armies together with Poland’s broke the Teutonic Order for good. Vytautas also invited the Karaim community to Trakai, where their descendants still bake kibinai today.
From 1569 Lithuania and Poland formed a two-nation Commonwealth, one of early modern Europe’s great experiments, with elected kings and a famously unruly parliament. On 3 May 1791 it adopted Europe’s first written constitution, a last burst of reform before the neighbours carved the state up entirely.
After the 1863 uprising, the tsars banned Lithuanian books printed in Latin letters for forty years. The response was unique in world history: the knygnešiai, book smugglers, carried hundreds of thousands of Lithuanian books over the border from Prussia in carts, coats and coffins, feeding a secret network of village schools. The ban fell in 1904, defeated by sheer stubborn literacy; Lithuania still celebrates Book Smuggler Day every March.
On 16 February 1918 Lithuania declared independence and then defended it in fact. With Vilnius disputed, interwar Kaunas became the provisional capital and built itself a startling modernist skyline, now UNESCO-listed, while the countryside sent basketball players abroad and got European champions back, twice, in 1937 and 1939.
1940 brought Soviet occupation, then Nazi occupation, then Soviet again. The Holocaust destroyed the Jewish world of which Vilnius, the Jerusalem of the North, had been a great capital, a loss Lithuania remembers with growing openness. Deportations sent tens of thousands to Siberia, and the forest brothers fought a partisan war from the woods into the 1950s. It is remembered soberly, and by name.
On 23 August 1989 Lithuania anchored the Baltic Way, the 675-kilometre human chain to Tallinn, and on 11 March 1990 it became the first republic to declare independence from the Soviet Union, full stop. In January 1991 unarmed crowds defended the TV tower and parliament with songs and sandbags; fourteen died, the state held, and the world followed Lithuania out.
Lithuania joined the EU and NATO in 2004 and the euro in 2015, and quietly became a technological heavyweight: its laser firms supply a striking share of the ultrafast lasers used in the world’s top laboratories. Basketball remains, by common consent, the second religion, and during championships the first.

Lithuania was pagan until 1387, a thousand years after Rome converted. Tap an item above to place it in time.
Lithuanian is the most archaic living Indo-European language, closer to the ancient mother tongue than Greek or Latin ever were. Set it beside Sanskrit, recorded in India over three thousand years ago, and the family resemblance is eerie. Tap a word.
Šaltibarščiai is Lithuania’s cold summer soup of beets, kefir, cucumber and dill, served with hot potatoes on the side, and it is, without exaggeration, the most spectacularly pink food in Europe. The colour is entirely natural, which locals mention with visible pride. Your bowl is waiting.
A clean bowl, a summer day, and a plan.
On a low mound near Šiauliai stand crosses beyond counting, well over a hundred thousand of them: tall and tiny, carved and plain, many topped with little suns where the old faith and the new shook hands. Nobody owns the Hill of Crosses and nobody guards it; people simply bring crosses, and always have. Lithuanian cross-crafting itself is UNESCO-listed. Add yours to the story.
The hill waits. It has never once stayed empty.
On 1 April 1997 the artists of Užupis, a small district across the Vilnelė river in Vilnius, declared independence, complete with a flag, a bronze angel, an army of roughly a dozen and a constitution now displayed on mirrored plaques in dozens of languages. Border control is a café; the visa is a stamp on request. The constitution, however, is entirely real, and entirely serious about not being serious. Draw an article.
Beyond the two big cities, Lithuania keeps a countryside of dunes, mounds and fairs where the old calendar still runs things. Tap one.
