A thousand islands and the art of pomalo
Croatia has 1,244 islands, islets and reefs, of which only around fifty are inhabited, and a philosophy to match, summed up in one Dalmatian word: pomalo, take it slowly. This is the country where a Roman emperor resigned to grow cabbages, where the sea plays a real organ in Zadar, and which quietly handed the world the necktie, the parachute and the torpedo. Here is a short, hands-on tour of the place we deliver to.
From a clay dove to two doors in one day
Tap through the layers, from the Danube plain of Slavonia to the islands and back. Zagreb will forgive us; the story mostly happened elsewhere.
Vučedol
On the Danube bank in Slavonia, near Vukovar, the Vučedol culture was smelting copper and shaping elegant ceramics five thousand years ago. Its emblem, an ornamented bird vessel known as the Vučedol dove, is one of Croatia’s national treasures, and a pot from the site traces Orion and the turning seasons, giving Croatia a serious claim to one of Europe’s oldest calendars.
Greeks and Illyrians
Greek colonists sailed up the Adriatic and founded Issa on the island of Vis and Pharos on Hvar in the fourth century BC. On Hvar they divided the fertile plain by Stari Grad into neat stone-walled plots, and here is the astonishing part: farmers still work the very same boundaries twenty-four centuries later, which is why the plain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around them lived the Illyrians, seafarers Rome took two centuries to subdue.
The emperor retires
In 305 AD Diocletian did what no Roman emperor had done before: he resigned. He built a vast retirement palace on the bay of Split and, when begged to return to power, replied that if his visitors could see the cabbages he had planted with his own hands, they would not ask. The palace never emptied; it simply became the city. Around three thousand people live inside its Roman walls today, hanging their washing between imperial columns.
A kingdom is crowned
The Croats arrived in the seventh century and, by 925, Tomislav was styled the first Croatian king. The early kingdom’s heart lay near the coast, in towns like Nin, which still keeps what locals cheerfully call the smallest cathedral in the world, and its script was Glagolitic, an alphabet Croatia would keep alive longer than anyone else.
Crowns and coasts
From 1102 Croatia shared a crown with Hungary while keeping its own parliament, the Sabor, and its own viceroys, the bans. On the coast, city-states traded and built under changing flags, and in Šibenik rose a cathedral assembled entirely from stone slabs of Brač and Korčula, without a brick or a beam of timber, now UNESCO-listed.
The Republic of Ragusa
Dubrovnik spent four and a half centuries as a free merchant republic with the motto Libertas, defending itself with diplomacy rather than armies. It legislated the world’s first organised quarantine in 1377, banned the trading of slaves in 1416, among the earliest in Europe, and runs a pharmacy that has been dispensing since 1317. Small, walled and stubborn, it outlasted empires.
Venice, Vienna and the frontier
Venice held much of the coast for centuries, leaving winged lions over the gates, while from 1527 the Habsburgs ruled inland and organised the Military Frontier against the Ottoman advance. Between the powers, the uskoks of Senj raided from tiny boats and answered to almost nobody.
The revival
In the nineteenth century the Illyrian movement, led by Ljudevit Gaj, standardised the language, filled reading rooms and gave the culture a modern voice. Poets, printers and stubborn schoolteachers did the quiet work of making a nation legible to itself.
The hard century
The twentieth century brought two Yugoslavias and the upheavals of two world wars. Croatia declared independence in 1991 and defended it through the Homeland War of the early 1990s, a chapter remembered with sober pride. The country that emerged rebuilt quickly, joined NATO in 2009, and turned its coast back into one of Europe’s great summer addresses.
Into Europe
Croatia joined the European Union in 2013 and then did something no country had managed before: on the first of January 2023 it adopted the euro and joined the Schengen area on the very same day, walking through two doors at once. The kuna is retired, the borders are open, and the ferries run on the same timetable as ever, which is to say, pomalo.
How old is that, exactly? Tap one to place it in time.
Diocletian’s Palace has been continuously inhabited for over seventeen centuries. Tap an item above to place it in time.
A thousand islands, give or take
The official count is 1,244 islands, islets and reefs strung down the Adriatic, and each inhabited one has its own accent, patron saint and firmly held opinions. Tap an island.
The city where the sea plays the organ
On the waterfront of Zadar, in 2005, the architect Nikola Bašić cut thirty-five organ pipes into the white stone steps of the quay. Every wave that arrives pushes air through them, so the Adriatic improvises soft chords around the clock, a different tune in every weather. The Sea Organ won the European Prize for Urban Public Space, its neighbour, the Greeting to the Sun, drinks daylight all day and glows it back at night, and Alfred Hitchcock, after an evening here in 1964, declared Zadar’s sunset the most beautiful in the world. Send a wave in yourself.
Thirty-five pipes under the steps, tuned so the sea can only play in harmony.
Each tap plays a soft, real chord through your speakers, the way the sea does it in Zadar.
How to speak Dalmatian summer
Croatian even disagrees with itself about the word for what: the three great dialect families are called čakavski, kajkavski and štokavski, after whether they say ča, kaj or što. The coast says ča, and takes its time saying it. Here is the essential vocabulary of the slow Adriatic day. Tap a word.
A heart with a mirror in it
The licitar is the bright red gingerbread heart of northern Croatia, iced by hand, hung on Christmas trees, and given at fairs and weddings for two centuries. The craft is UNESCO-listed, and it hides the tenderest detail in European folk art: many licitar hearts carry a small mirror, so that when your beloved looks at the gift, they see themselves inside your heart. Decorate this one.
Look closely: whoever receives this heart finds themselves inside it.
Songs, swords and a ball that must not get wet
Croatia holds one of the richest collections of UNESCO-listed living traditions in Europe, and several of the best involve either singing in a doorway or galloping at an iron ring. Tap one.
The inventions drawer
For a country of under four million, Croatia has left a surprising amount of hardware, and one very good dog, lying around the modern world. Flip a card.
A taste of the coast, and beyond it
Croatian cooking runs from Adriatic fish grilled over vine cuttings to the paprika heat of Slavonia, with the wind doing some of the work in between. Flip a card.
