Portugal’s land borders have barely moved since 1297, and its English alliance has held since 1386; both are the oldest of their kind on Earth. It grows over half the world’s cork, keeps a gilded library guarded by bats, surfs waves the height of office blocks beneath a red lighthouse, and named its revolution after a flower. Its favourite word, saudade, means missing something so beautifully that you would not trade the ache. Here is a short, hands-on tour of the place we deliver to.
Tap through the layers. It begins with Ice Age engravings and ends, characteristically, with a song on the radio.
Along the Côa valley, Ice Age hunters engraved horses and aurochs into open rock more than twenty thousand years ago, an outdoor gallery now UNESCO-listed and still legible in raking light. Much later, the Lusitanian shepherd-general Viriathus ran rings around Rome for a decade; Rome only managed him by bribing his own envoys, a detail Roman historians recorded with visible embarrassment.
Afonso Henriques fought his way to a crown, taking the title of king in 1139, and by 1249 the conquest of the Algarve completed the map. The Treaty of Alcanices in 1297 then fixed the land border with Castile, and it has scarcely moved since: the oldest settled border in Europe, and arguably anywhere.
In 1385 at Aljubarrota, an outnumbered Portuguese army with English archers secured independence from Castile for good; the Treaty of Windsor the following year sealed an alliance with England that has never lapsed, the oldest still in force in the world. It was invoked as recently as 1943, when Britain politely asked its old friend for the use of the Azores.
From the windswept southwest, Henry the Navigator sent ships past the dread of Cape Bojador in 1434, and the world unrolled: Dias rounded Africa in 1488, Gama reached India in 1498, Cabral touched Brazil in 1500, and Magellan, a Portuguese captain sailing for Spain, led the expedition that first circled the earth. In 1494 at Tordesillas, Portugal and Castile had already divided the entire unknown world between them with a single line, an act of confidence never repeated.
Spices and gold raised Manueline stone carved with ropes, coral and sea-monsters at Belém. But the same fleets also began the Atlantic slave trade, a weight Portugal now examines openly. In 1543 Portuguese traders became the first Europeans in Japan, leaving firearms, a scatter of loanwords, and a fried Lenten snack the Japanese would perfect as tempura.
On All Saints’ morning, 1755, an earthquake, tsunami and fires levelled Lisbon in one of history’s deadliest disasters, shaking Europe’s philosophy along with its buildings; Voltaire never got over it. The Marquis of Pombal answered with the era’s best crisis line, bury the dead and care for the living, then rebuilt the downtown on a rational grid braced with hidden wooden cages: anti-seismic engineering, a century early.
In 1756 Pombal drew a legal boundary around the Douro’s vineyards, creating the world’s first demarcated wine region. Rabelo boats ran the barrels downriver to Porto, whose old Roman name, Portus Cale, had long since grown into the name of the whole country. The hand-cut schist terraces are UNESCO-listed as a landscape made entirely of labour.
The monarchy fell in 1910; from 1933 Salazar’s Estado Novo settled into one of Europe’s longest dictatorships, nearly half a century of censorship, secret police and draining colonial wars. Villages emptied quietly into emigration, and fado carried what could not be said aloud.
Just after midnight on 25 April 1974, a banned song on the radio, Grândola Vila Morena, was the go-signal: young officers took the country by morning, almost without a shot, and Lisbon’s flower sellers filled the soldiers’ rifle barrels with carnations. The revolution is named after the flower, and the anniversary is simply called Freedom Day.
In the EU since 1986, Portugal now exports what it always had: over half the world’s cork, fado inscribed by UNESCO, record waves at Nazaré, and calm as a way of life. The borders are old, the manners are mild, and the longing, famously, does not translate.
Older than you think. Tap one to place it in time.
Portugal’s mainland borders have been settled since 1297. Tap an item above to place it in time.
Portugal grows more than half the world’s cork in the montado, oak savannahs that double as haven for eagles, black pigs and even the Iberian lynx. Every nine years, harvesters peel the bark by hand with short axes, the tree carries on unbothered, and a white number painted on the trunk tells everyone which year it gave. This one is ready.
An Alentejo montado at harvest time: this oak’s bark is nine summers thick, and the strippers are ready.
Off the beach at Nazaré runs Europe’s deepest submarine canyon, plunging five kilometres and funnelling the whole Atlantic at one small fishing town. When the big winter swells arrive, the sea here builds the largest waves ever surfed, measured against the little red lighthouse fort on the cliff. Feed the swell and watch the scale change.
A flat day at Praia do Norte. The canyon below is merely waiting.
Portuguese keeps a shelf of words other languages circle without landing on. Tap one.
Portugal fits a lot of country into a thin Atlantic strip, and then keeps two more Portugals out at sea. Tap a place.
A national highlight reel featuring a miracle rooster, night-shift bats and the world’s most enduring friendship. Flip a card.
Portuguese food runs on olive oil, salt cod, charcoal smoke and pastry theology, all portioned by people who worry you are not eating enough. Flip a card.
