Romania speaks a Latin language on a Slavic street, painted its monasteries on the outside five centuries ago in a blue that has not faded, and buries its dead beneath rhymes in a cemetery famous for laughing. Its forests hold roughly six thousand brown bears, Europe’s largest wild population outside Russia; its gymnast broke the Olympic scoreboard with the first perfect 10; and the real Dracula was a voivode who never met a vampire. Here is a short, hands-on tour of the place we deliver to.
Tap through the layers. The story starts seven thousand years ago, with people who set fire to their own cities on purpose.
Between the Carpathians and the rivers of the east, the Cucuteni culture raised some of Europe’s oldest large settlements seven thousand years ago, painting swirling pottery of startling beauty, and then, every sixty-odd years, deliberately burning their towns to the ground and building afresh. Archaeologists still argue about why; the pottery survived every fire, which may have been the point.
The Dacians of Sarmizegetusa held the mountains until Trajan’s legions came, twice, in wars so consequential that Rome spiralled the whole campaign up a marble column that still stands in the city that won. From the mixing came a stubborn miracle: a Latin language that has held its ground in a Slavic sea for nearly two thousand years.
Three lands grew side by side: Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania. Wallachia’s Vlad III, called Țepeș, fought the Ottomans with legendary severity and kept legendary order: chroniclers claimed a golden cup could stand at a public fountain untouched. Centuries later an Irish novelist borrowed his patronymic, Dracula, son of the Dragon, for a vampire. The voivode himself never met one.
German settlers raised seven walled towns and, across more than 150 villages, fortified their churches into refuges with grain lofts and bacon towers, a UNESCO-listed landscape of defensive faith. Sighișoara’s citadel is still lived in today, and Sibiu’s rooftops grew their famous sleepy eyes, the very ones keeping watch from the top of this page.
In Bucovina, Stephen the Great and his heirs painted their monasteries on the outside: whole facades of fresco, saints and sieges open to the weather. Five centuries of rain later, Voroneț’s blue has not faded, and chemists still debate the recipe. Locals do not: heaven, they say, simply approves.
In 1859 Wallachia and Moldavia elected the same man, Alexandru Ioan Cuza, to both thrones, quietly uniting what the empires would not permit loudly. Independence was won on the battlefield in 1877, and a kingdom followed a few years after; the map had a new name on it.
On 1 December 1918 at Alba Iulia, Transylvania voted to join, and modern Romania assembled itself; the date is now the national day. Queen Marie, English-born and Romanian by fierce conviction, then charmed the Paris peace conference into confirming it, arguably the most effective royal diplomacy of the century.
The Second World War brought dictatorship, and the Holocaust reached Romania too, a history the country now confronts openly. Communism followed: Ceaușescu’s regime bulldozed old neighbourhoods to raise the heaviest building on Earth and rationed light itself while exporting nearly everything else. It is remembered soberly, and by name.
The bloc’s one violent revolution began not in the capital but in Timișoara, in December 1989, when a crowd formed around a defiant pastor’s house and refused to go home. Within ten days the dictatorship was finished. The price was paid in lives, and the city that lit first has never let anyone forget it.
An EU member since 2007, Romania now runs on some of Europe’s fastest internet and a booming tech scene around Cluj, while keeping the continent’s greatest wilderness: the Carpathians shelter roughly six thousand brown bears, plus wolves and lynx, more large carnivores than all the lands west of it combined.

Cucuteni towns were burning themselves down on purpose before the pyramids went up. Tap an item above to place it in time.
In Săpânța, Maramureș, the carver Stan Ioan Pătraș began in 1935 to paint oak crosses a particular blue and letter them with rhymed, mischievous farewells; more than eight hundred now stand, celebrating lives instead of mourning them. Locals trace the cheer to the old Dacian idea that death was a doorway, not a wall. The verses below are ours, in the spirit of the originals, which rhyme in Romanian and spare nobody.
Where the Danube finally forgets it was ever in a hurry, it unravels into Europe’s greatest wetland: the Delta, a UNESCO reserve of channels and floating reed islands, home to over three hundred bird species and the continent’s largest pelican colonies. Push off from the bank.
Reed, water and sky, in the proportions the Danube prefers.
Romania’s year still runs on older machinery: threads, bears, blouses and fairy nights. Tap one.
Transylvania is only the beginning; the rest of the map is just as generously supplied. Tap a place.
A national highlight reel involving one misunderstood voivode, one broken scoreboard and one very heavy building. Flip a card.
Romanian cooking is grandmother diplomacy: cabbage parcels, golden polenta and desserts served after you have already surrendered. Flip a card.
