Poland · up close
Poland spent 123 years erased from the map entirely, and returned. Its astronomer stopped the sun and moved the earth, its mathematicians cracked Enigma before the war even began, its shipyard electrician talked an empire into retreat, and its capital was rebuilt room by room from eighteenth-century paintings. It has since managed roughly three decades without a recession, presumably to make up for lost time. Here is a short, hands-on tour of the place we deliver to.
Tap through the layers. Few countries have been unmade and remade this often, or this thoroughly.
Long before Poland had a name, an Iron Age community built a fortified lake town at Biskupin from thousands of oak logs; tree-ring science has dated the felling to the winter of 738 BC, a precision most written history can only envy. The West Slavs arrived later, settled the great river plains, and stayed.
In 966 Duke Mieszko I accepted Christianity, the act Poles count as the country’s founding paperwork, and in 1025 Bolesław the Brave took a royal crown. A state took shape between the Baltic and the Carpathians, with its early capitals at Gniezno and Kraków.
Kazimierz the Great, who found a Poland of wood and left one of brick, founded Kraków’s university in 1364, where a certain Copernicus would later enrol. In 1410 at Grunwald, Polish and Lithuanian armies together broke the Teutonic Order, the very battle our Lithuania page mentions from the other side of the same victory.
From 1569 Poland and Lithuania formed a vast two-nation republic with elected kings and, in the Warsaw Confederation of 1573, religious tolerance written into law centuries ahead of the neighbours. In 1543 Copernicus had already published the book that stopped the sun and moved the earth; in 1683 Sobieski’s winged hussars thundered down the Kahlenberg and saved Vienna.
On 3 May 1791 the Commonwealth adopted Europe’s first written constitution, a last blaze of reform. Its neighbours answered by partitioning the country three times, and in 1795 Poland vanished from the map of Europe altogether. It would not return for 123 years.
A nation without a state kept itself alive in language, faith and music. Chopin carried Poland into every concert hall in Europe, and after his death in Paris his heart was smuggled home in a jar, where it rests today inside a Warsaw church pillar. Maria Skłodowska, later Curie, left partitioned Warsaw to win two Nobel Prizes and named her first element polonium, after a country that officially did not exist.
In November 1918 Poland reappeared, and in 1920 its army turned the Red Army around at the Vistula, a battle Europe barely noticed and never forgot. The interwar republic built the port city of Gdynia out of a fishing village in a single generation, just to prove it could.
Invaded from both sides in 1939, Poland lost some six million citizens, half of them Polish Jews, as the German occupiers built their largest death camps on occupied Polish soil; Katyń took the officer corps in the east. Warsaw rose in 1944 and was razed almost entirely in reprisal, then rebuilt brick by brick after the war, its Old Town recreated from Bellotto’s eighteenth-century paintings, a resurrection UNESCO honoured. It is remembered soberly, and by name.
In August 1980 an electrician named Lech Wałęsa climbed the fence of the Gdańsk shipyard, and the strike he led became Solidarity: ten million members, the first independent trade union in the bloc, blessed from Rome by a Polish pope. Martial law delayed the ending but could not change it; the Round Table of 1989 and the June elections cracked the Iron Curtain from the Polish side first.
Poland joined the EU in 2004 and simply did not stop: nearly three decades of unbroken growth, motorways where cart tracks ran, and a games industry whose Witcher conquered the world’s consoles from Warsaw desks. The comeback, Poles will note, is a national genre.

Biskupin’s oaks were felled in the winter of 738 BC, and science can prove the season. Tap an item above to place it in time.
Every hour, on the hour, a trumpeter plays the hejnał from the tallest tower of St Mary’s in Kraków, once to each point of the compass, and every single time the melody stops abruptly mid-note. The legend runs that a watchman was struck in the throat by a Tatar arrow while sounding the alarm, and the city has honoured the broken phrase ever since; Polish Radio has broadcast the noon call live since 1927. Sound on, and listen for where it ends.
The tower waits. Four windows, four directions, one unfinished tune.
Pierogi are Poland’s half-moon dumplings, boiled then blessed with butter, and the units in which grandmotherly love is officially measured. Fillings run from potato-and-cheese ruskie, named for old Red Ruthenia rather than anywhere further east, to Christmas cabbage-and-mushroom and summer blueberries under cream. The dough is rolled; the table is floured. Get folding.
An empty plate is a temporary condition in Poland.
Polish is a beautiful language wearing full armour: soft, musical, and spelled like a security question. Tap a word and see what your mouth is up against.
Under Wawel hill in Kraków lived the dragon that terrorised the city until, the tale goes, a cobbler’s apprentice fed it a sulphur-stuffed sheep. Since 1972 a bronze Smok has stood guard at the cave mouth, and it genuinely breathes fire every few minutes; for years, you could even summon a blast by text message. Go on, then.
The bronze is by Bronisław Chromy, the temper is original.
Poland is a plains country with mountain edges, lake mazes and a forest older than the borders. Tap a place.
A short national receipt, from the solar system to your games console. Flip a card.
Polish food is winter insurance served with dill, and portions calibrated for field work you have no intention of doing. The word wódka, for the record, first appears in Polish court documents in 1405, a fact raised gently whenever neighbours claim otherwise. Flip a card.
